Loading... Is it time to plan your spring garden? If now, when do you plan your garden?

We almost have our own season cycle in Texas - we plant earlier than up north and harvest earlier. We can set out some plants in the next month or so, as long as we don't get a late freeze.

I feel you Dave. I've been itching to start gardening, but with a little over a foot of snow still on the ground here in Colorado, I'm still a ways off. Here in a few days I'll start some of my spring plants indoors for planting in mid/late march. I wish my climate was more like yours! Take it easy

I plant on the full moon after the last frost of the year. This year it'll probably be Mar 8th for me. We also get a fall crop which would go in the first of Oct. Planning is done soon as the last harvest ,we start getting ready for the next crop.

i'll think about my garden when ever i look in the backyard and see the empty raised bed but still way too soon here in CT to do anything but plan. General rule of thumb in my neck of the woods is to not plant anything in the ground before May 15th, although i usually try to start plants inside or on the deck(which can be a pain to bring in and out if a late season freeze comes) in April. I know some people who even start growing plants indoors in March.

On a different note but still related to gardening, I just read an article the other day that in part because of the unusually warm weather in the east and the use of plastic tarps (like a greenhouse) The White House's vegetable garden has been growing cold weather crops all winter, at least according to one of the head chefs. I thought that was pretty cool, i wish i could build some type of greenhouse to grow vegetables all year round!

I started planning mine last summer. Our garden is comprised mostly of a series of raised beds and we try to rotate everything around from bed to bed. I keep a garden journal and sketch out where things are planted each year and make notes of where I think things should go the next year. We're going to add another raised bed this year and I always try to grow something new each year. Last year it was celery, which will definitely make the cut again this year. Haven't decided what my new thing will be this year. Maybe brussels sprouts because I'm finally getting my husband to eat them. I have a gift certificate from Seed Savers that I got for Christmas and I will be putting in my seed order soon. Yay!

Your gardens soil is very important and you will want to prepare your gardens soil for planting your seeds and plants in. I have what I call a kitchen garden and it consists of a 12 foot wide by 36 foot long bed of soil surrounded by old cross ties.
